First Days With Smedium Knotless Braids: 7 Care Mistakes to Avoid
By THE BOHO GIRL | November 5, 2026
I hear it all the time after an appointment: returning clients telling me the braiding experience was wonderful and they love their new look. The fastest way to keep that fresh, neat finish is simple: don’t get your Smedium knotless braids wet for the first 48 hours. Those first two days are when your parts, your scalp, and the braid base settle into place.
If you’re in Emeryville, especially around West Emeryville and the Powell Street corridor near the Emeryville-Oakland border, you already know our weather can switch up fast. Cool mornings, fog, and wind are real. That’s why the goal in the first days isn’t heavy product. It’s protection, light moisture when needed, and zero extra tension. Below are the 7 mistakes I see most often, plus what to do instead so your knotless braid style stays lightweight, clean-looking, and comfortable.
The first 48 hours: 3 rules that keep knotless braids neat
These first two days matter. A lot. I’m not trying to be strict, I’m trying to keep you from frizz, puffed-up parts, and that itchy buildup feeling that can show up when product and moisture hit too early.
48-hour non-negotiable: Keep your braids dry. No washing, no soaking, and be careful in steamy showers. If you have to shower, tie hair up and keep it out of the direct spray.
Mistake #1: “It’s just water, ” then the parts swell
Water makes hair expand. That can puff the base of the braid and soften the crisp parting before it has a chance to settle. I generally recommend waiting at least 48 hours before any rinse, wash, or heavy scalp spray.
Mistake #2: Heavy oils and pomades right away
In the Bay Area, that combo of wind plus commuting can turn thick oil into a lint magnet. If your scalp feels dry, use a light mist only. Skip greasy products the first week. They tend to sit at the base of knotless braids and attract buildup fast.
Mistake #3: Tight ponytails and “snatched” styles on day one
Knotless braids are meant to feel lighter. But even a knotless braid can stress your edges if you pull it up tight too soon. For the first couple days, keep it down or do a low, loose style. Your hairline will thank you.
Days 3 to 7: the 4 mistakes that shorten the life of your braids
This is the week when people usually start getting compliments, because the style looks settled and natural. I’ve had plenty of clients leave feeling confident about their look, and this is the window where aftercare keeps that “fresh install” look going.
Mistake #4: Rubbing sweat into the scalp after workouts
You can exercise. I just don’t want you scrubbing your braids like a towel-dry blowout. If you sweat during a post-commute workout, blot your scalp gently with a clean towel. No rubbing. If you wear a head covering, go breathable and not tight.
Mistake #5: Picking at your parts (even “just a little”)
If your scalp itches, it usually means one of two things: dryness or buildup. Picking makes it worse and can rough up the base of the braids. A light scalp mist and gentle fingertip pressure usually handles it better than nails.
Mistake #6: Washing too aggressively too soon
I generally like the first gentle cleanse around day 7 to 10, unless you have heavy sweat or obvious buildup. When you do wash, think scalp-focused and controlled. You’re cleaning the skin, not roughing up the braid length.
Quick wash tip: Dilute shampoo with water in an applicator bottle if you have one. Apply to the scalp in sections, massage lightly with pads of fingers, then rinse downward. Don’t pile braids on top of your head and scrub.
Mistake #7: Sleeping unprotected, then fighting frizz every morning
Night protection is the low-effort trick that keeps knotless braids looking neat. Use a satin bonnet or scarf, and if you move a lot in your sleep, a satin pillowcase helps as backup. In windy Emeryville mornings, that little bit of frizz prevention makes your whole day easier.
Lightweight products that work with knotless braids (not against them)
I’m big on keeping it simple in the first week. If you pile on products, you’ll end up needing to wash sooner, and that’s when neat parts can get fuzzy.
My go-to aftercare lineup (by type)
- Scalp mist: Water-based, light, and not greasy. Use a little, then stop. Your scalp shouldn’t feel coated.
- Light oil (optional): If you run dry, use a tiny amount and keep it on the scalp, not the braid length.
- Mousse for flyaways: A small amount smoothed over the top layer can help keep things polished without weighing braids down.
And a quick note on hair: for knotless and boho braid services, I include braiding hair in colors 1, 1b, 2, and 4. For boho knotless braids, you’ll bring your curly hair unless I tell you otherwise. If you’re deciding between classic knotless braid looks and a boho finish, my boho and knotless braids guide breaks down the difference in a way that’s easy to picture.
If something feels off, reach out early (I’m responsive for a reason)
A little scalp tenderness can be normal right after braiding. What I don’t want you doing is “pushing through” sharp pain, bumps that feel inflamed, or braids that feel too tight around your edges. If your ponytail options feel limited because of tension, tell me. I’d rather adjust things early than have you uncomfortable for days.

Local note: I’m right here in West Emeryville near the Powell Street corridor, so quick check-ins and small adjustments are easy if you’re coming from Emeryville, Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Albany, Piedmont, or El Cerrito.
Thinking ahead: timing, length, and keeping your install stress-free
Smedium knotless braids are one of my favorite “looks good in real life” styles. The install time varies based on size and length, typically 4 to 8 hours. If you need an exact estimate for your braid size, your length choice, or a boho finish, let’s talk it through before your appointment.
For this service, I do medium knotless braids at lower back length, and waist length adds $25. Braiding hair is included (colors 1, 1b, 2, and 4). If you want the boho look, plan to bring your curly hair unless I tell you otherwise.
