Consultation Duration: Real Timelines (30 min) and 6 Ways to Extend

West Emeryville, near the Powell Street corridor and the Emeryville–Oakland border
A typical Consultation with me runs 30 minutes. A full, start-to-finish assessment usually takes 30 minutes, especially when you’re bringing inspo and we’re making a real plan. People come to me for details like neat parting and a finished look they love, so I keep the Consultation time efficient, but I don’t rush the parts that protect your results later.
What I’m actually doing in your Consultation
The time isn’t random. It’s a 30-minute Consultation where we confirm details before your service.
Consultation (30 minutes)
- Confirm the service you’re aiming for and your timing.
- Look at your hair condition up close (density, breakage, scalp comfort).
- Review inspo briefly so we’re aligned on size, finish, and vibe.
- Make sure we’re on the same page about price and what you’re booking.
Full assessment (30 minutes)
- Go through your hair history and what has or hasn’t worked for you.
- Do a more detailed check on hairline tension, shedding concerns, and how your hair behaves day to day.
- Talk through maintenance and your lifestyle, so your style doesn’t feel like a second job.
- Leave with a clear plan and product direction for homecare.
Local note: In Emeryville and the greater East Bay, a lot of my clients are fitting appointments around I-80 travel and transit. If you need a tight window, tell me up front and I’ll keep the Consultation focused so we still get a real plan.
How long do results last after a Consultation in Emeryville?
Here’s the honest answer: the Consultation itself is a 30-minute appointment with a $25 fee, but the value lasts as long as you keep using the plan.
A few things make your plan “age” faster: switching products every week, skipping the prep I recommend, or showing up for your service with surprise details. On the other hand, when you bring clear inspo and we set expectations, you tend to leave with that “this is exactly what I wanted” feeling people talk about after their appointment.
Plan holds longer when:
- You follow the same home routine we mapped out.
- Your goals stay the same and your hair condition stays stable.
- You bring the same inspo references back if you want consistency.
Plan needs a refresh when:
- You’re changing styles, length, or adding extensions.
- You’ve had breakage, shedding, or scalp sensitivity show up.
- You’re dealing with Bay Area weather shifts, sun, or frequent workouts that change how your hair wears.
And yes, climate matters here. Emeryville’s mix of wind, sun, and coastal air can dry hair out, then swing to damp days that create more frizz and product buildup. I factor that into what I recommend so your plan works in real life, not just on day one.
6 Consultation tips that keep your plan working longer (and make your install day smoother)
If you want the Consultation to keep paying off weeks later, it comes down to two things: bring me the right info, then actually follow the plan. Here’s what makes the biggest difference.
- Bring your inspo and be honest about your hair. TikToks, photos, screenshots are perfect. If you’ve got breakage, tenderness, or you’re not sure what your hair can handle right now, tell me. That’s how we land on a style you’ll love and can actually maintain.
- Show me what “neat” means to you. Some people want ultra-crisp parts. Some want a softer, lived-in finish. When we define that in the Consultation, you’re not rolling the dice on install day.
- Follow product directions. Most homecare fails because people switch up too fast. Give the routine time to work, then we adjust if needed at follow-up.
- Keep notes on irritation or shedding. If something feels off, don’t wait until it’s a whole situation. Write down when it started and what you used. That makes your follow-up fast and useful.
- Protect your style at night. A bonnet or scarf plus keeping friction down matters more than most people think. It’s one of the easiest ways to keep your hair looking fresh longer.
- Book the follow-up before life gets busy. If you’re commuting through the East Bay, it’s easier to stay consistent when your follow-up is already on the calendar. I’ll suggest a window based on your goal and what your hair is telling me.

The 4 things that shorten your Consultation value fast
Most “my plan didn’t work” problems come back to the same few issues. I’ll keep it real, because this saves you time and money.
- Unclear goals. If you’re not sure if you want boho braids, knotless, a wig install, or something else, bring options. I’ll help you narrow it down.
- Missing hair history. Recent color, chemical services, postpartum shedding, or scalp sensitivity changes the plan.
- Skipping the follow-up. If the plan needed a check and you wait 3 months, we’re usually starting over.
- Inconsistent home routine. Switching products constantly makes it hard to tell what’s helping and what’s hurting.
Quick fix: If you’re unsure what to bring or what to ask, write down your top two goals and your biggest worry. That alone makes the Consultation more productive.
When to book your Consultation follow-up and long-term check-ins
If you want a simple schedule, this is the one I usually recommend. It respects real life, especially if you’re coming in from Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Albany, Piedmont, El Cerrito, or you’re fitting me in near Bay Street, the marina, or along the Powell Street corridor.
First follow-up
Timing depends on your goals, your routine, and what we decide during your assessment.
Long-term check-ins
If your hair is consistent, we can stretch it. If your goals change often, or you’re doing different installs across the year, more frequent check-ins keep things smooth.
If you’re brand new and still deciding, start with my Consultation vs. booking your treatment guide. It’ll help you choose the right first step without overthinking it.
Ready for a time-efficient plan? If you want your next appointment to feel organized and calm, book the $25 Consultation first. Come in with your inspo, your questions, and your real schedule. I’ll take it from there.
